Our first stop, of Riga, proved to us all that our stereotypes of Eastern Europe were completely right, we were briefed on security by the defence attaché with particular focus on strip clubs and were told that if anyone found William attractive they were definitely a Russian spy and should be avoided at all costs. We are pretty sure we met a couple of young FSB recruits later that night.
Our next port was Roomassaare, which apparently none of us could pronounce correctly, activities here included teasing of the way Jane said “power shower”, a visit to a 15th century castle inside an 18th century fort and things we were told not to talk about.
The much anticipated Island-of-the-ladies proved to be surprising in many senses; the first (and most disappointing) was that there were in fact some men on the island; the second was the lifts through pristine forests in the back of pickup trucks; and the erm... potent home brew.
We are fairly sure that we made quite an impact on the Baltic States
I’m sure they all sleep more soundly are a result.
