induction weekend 2014

The induction weekend was certainly a learning opportunity. We learnt how bad we were at marching, how much polishing it takes to make shoes even remotely acceptable, how angry you can make your CO when you lock yourself out of your room at 2 am (only me on that one I think) and how much fun the Unit can be.
The weekend was split up into a variety of activities ranging from the expected drill and uniform inspections through to playing team sports (Bucketball) and visiting Archer to see what a P2000 class is all about.
Of course the mess bar received a large amount of custom as to be expected but everyone(ish) was on point each day to continue with the activities and continue getting acquainted with the unit.      The weekend started with 1 minute spot presentations where everyone looked a little bizarre as they explained topics ranging from Water to Hippos – which when you think about it are related. What followed was a late night where everyone realised their shirts were not polished and their shoes were not ironed. Come the wakeup call at 6:30 however everyone was ready to go. Whether people were feeling awake after drill and the swim test I cannot say but everyone continued regardless.
The Saturday afternoon involved two exercises, an acquaint with Archer where we got to understand a little more about the sea weekends and also team building exercises which unlike most team building exercises did not fracture the group into tiny pieces. The day was brought to an end with a social in the mess where everyone had a few drinks and got to know their Edinburgh counterparts.
Sunday was a more relaxed affair with the focus on team sports during the morning with the heated Bucketball tournament followed by Longball; a sport with rules that still elude me. So to conclude the induction weekend was a great introduction to what will hopefully be a great year.
