On July 19th, GSURNU commanded by Lieutenant Simon Collins and Sub Lieutenant Danielle Jackson became the first URNU ever to complete the 4 day Nijmegan marches covering a distance of 160km. Although there were a few blisters and times when morale was low, the team pushed on with some great singing and encouragement from other teams and in the end all earned the famous Nijmegan Vierdaagse medal.
O/Cdt Brown reports on G&S URNU's trip to Germany in June, to take part in 'Bavarian Surprise' as part of their ongoing Adventurous Training:
Challenge number one...get there.
Normal people would fly over but we, the navy, don't do things the same way. We like to test ourselves, and 13 hours of testing on a coach proved difficult for some but in the end we all made it there. We met up with other naval personnel in Dover where our voyage would start.
All of us (about 50 in total) finally arrived at the house we would be staying in. A quick brief from Chesty ,the manager of the house, and then we were shown to our rooms. After this we were taken to a man-made lake where we got the chance to water ski and wake board and sample some of that amazing German beer, which we all became very fond of! Back at the house the “getting to know you” started over card games, table tennis and of course more beer.
Monday arrived and this meant activities! Split into four groups we all went our separate ways, taking part in kayaking, mountain biking, hill walking, rock climbing and then finally white water rafting together.
Everyone had a blast doing the activities during the day and the nights were filled with just as much fun. One night we went to a swimming pool where everyone enjoyed a night of fun slides and chilling out. Of course we can't forget the famous Chesty's pub quiz that took place (warning though ,you would need to be Einstein to know all the answers to his questions; I'm sure he just Googled random questions!). But nevertheless it was a great night and of course there was more beer! The last night was enjoyed with a barbecue and then we all hit the town; a great end to a great week of fun and new friendships.
Bavaria, it will always surprise you.
